Bologna Réserve Spéciale 42°: Description and customer reviews

Bologne Réserve Spéciale is an aged agricultural rum bottled under the Guadeloupe PGI label. Made from black and red cane, this rum is faithful to the volcanic terroir of Basse-Terre. Frédéric David, cellar master at Maison Bologne, oversees the aging process. This cuvée is a blend of rums that have rested for at least 4 years in French oak barrels containing Cognac.

Nico's tasting notes

The nose is relatively shy at first, although we sense that an apricot jam is beginning to release a few bubbles and perfume the glass. It's the ripe, patinated fruit cane that surfaces first, and begins to put us at ease.

Aeration confirms the quiet side of this rum, which gently settles on a rather mellow blond tobacco. The cane is candied and fluffy, lightly coated with apricot and orange jam.

On the palate, the cane gently takes possession of the taste buds, still accompanied by its jam where orange now dominates. It attracts attention with its savory, oily zest, then retreats to a cane of wisdom and delicacy.

The finish maintains this velvety, nougat-like sweetness, enhanced by orange peel and a hint of mango.

"A cane long matured, even to the point of looking like jam...".

On the nose 👃🏻: the typical profile of rums aged in ex-Cognac casks is immediately apparent, with a fruity note of apple in particular, and prune to a lesser extent. It's quite round and smooth, and the nose is easily approached. There's a hint of vanilla with a honey-like sweetness, and the woodiness is moderate. Mostly peppery, the cane juice expresses itself, delivering a note of cocoa powder as the glass is aired.

In the mouth 👅: it's round and a little fatty, well sweetened and greedy. On the first sip I get, as on the nose, fruitiness with apple, quite woody this time, all with good intensity and vanilla following right behind. On subsequent sips, the pepper comes in with a vengeance, and the woodiness now brings out notes of roasting. And that cocoa note comes through more and more clearly as the tasting progresses.

The finish is moderately long on the palate and rather dry, like most agricultural rums. With a predominance of pepper and vanilla and a more subdued chocolate note that lingers for a few moments to our delight 👌

Following on from the Bologna Cask Matured, which I already like a lot, this Réserve Spéciale keeps a recognizable profile but clearly goes further in terms of flavors thanks to extended aging, it's delicious ✨
