Dos Maderas Seleccion 42° : Description and customer reviews

This rum is a blend of the famous Dos Maderas 5+5 (aged for a total of 10 years, 5 in a tropical climate and 5 in sherry casks in Andalusia), and rums from Barbados and Guyana aged for 10 years in bourbon casks.

Nico's tasting notes

The nose is quite full-bodied, close to copper and caramelized molasses, with a mineral character somewhere between coal and flint. The rum's gunpowder character harkens back to the days when the British Navy scoured the Caribbean in search of spirits that would give its sailors heart.
The aeration once again brings out the powder. Gunflint rubs shoulders with copper from the still and oxidized black fruits (plum, prune). Balance comes with a well-rounded wave that, we hope, won't cover everything. Fortunately, a few spices are there to keep the ship afloat.

The attack on the palate is very soft and round. It recalls the prune flavors of the nose, with their mellowness and slightly oxidized core. It's this pronounced taste of Sherry-style fruit that gives this rum its chewiness and sets it apart from other sweet rums. Next, the world of Andalusian wine unfolds, with nuts, wood, a little tannin and bitterness. This suave mouthfeel contrasts with the harshness of the sailors' world.

The finish is greedy, on Sherry, cherries or prunes in brandy.

"An interesting contrast between a full-bodied Navy-style nose and the sweetness of PX Sherry..."
