Equiano Original 43°: Description and customer reviews

Equiano Original is a singular blend and a great first, since it's the first time Africa and the Caribbean have been combined in the same rum. It traces the journey of Olaudah Equiano, a Nigerian forcibly brought to the colonies as a slave, who won his freedom thanks in part to his talents as a rum trader.

The first rum in this blend comes from the Gray's distillery in Mauritius. It is a column-distilled molasses rum, aged for 10 years in Cognac casks. It was shipped to Barbados to join another molasses rum from Foursquare, matured for 8 years. The blend was supervised by none other than Mr Richard Seale, based on an original idea by Ian Burrell, the rum's global ambassador.

In addition to the 5% of the brand's annual profits, $2 from each bottle is donated to associations working for equality and against modern-day slavery.

Nico's tasting notes

The nose shows an expressive but well-balanced profile. The young distillate still sings at the heart of the rum, with fruity, exotic accents. Passion fruit, apricot and morello cherry offer colorful notes, with a slight patina of spicy, toasty woodiness.

With aeration, the ripeness and ageing come more to the fore, without overshadowing the cheerfulness of the fruit. The soft, vanilla-wood cask wraps all this in a comfortable, cozy way, while the toasted coconut and hint of pepper provide staying power.

On the palate, the intensity is delightful, as the rum is as easy as it is tasty. The oak is dry and straightforward, showing both a certain spicy seriousness and a pleasant tenderness. Vanilla and toasted coconut take charge of the palate and steer the whole maneuver.

The finish features lighter, fruitier notes, with a hint of cane syrup.

"A very fair and well struck balance, both from the point of view of aromas and intensity..."
