Labourdonnais 1774 40°: Description and customer reviews

Labourdonnais 1774 is a rum made from pure cane juice, produced in Mapou in the north of Mauritius.

This is a rum that has matured for 2 years in ex-cognac casks before undergoing a 2-month maceration with calamondin grown on the estate, a natural hybrid between the kumquat and the mandarin orange.

This rum pays tribute to the Labourdonnais estate, founded in 1774, on which the distillery is located. The estate also houses a château built in 1859, now renovated and converted into a museum.

Nico's tasting notes

On the nose, it's a fresh, vegetal sensation that first jumps to the nostrils, with a natural, herbaceous cane. It gradually takes on fresh fruits, pears and yellow fruits, which become increasingly candied and sweet. We then move on to a very pastry-like register, with a candied citrus panettone.

Aeration enhances the brioche aromas, after a short ethereal flight. The fruitcake is golden with caramel and brown sugar, but is above all encrusted with oily citrus peel.

On the palate, the feel is round, very mellow, but nevertheless quite balanced. Candied citrus peel dominates, dispersing both fruity and bitter flavors. The greediness of the panettone cushions all this, and adds extra thickness.

The finish is round, slightly caramelized, then the citrus peel stretches its bitterness into the long finish.

"A gourmet, pastry-like cane juice filled with citrus peel..."

    As ordered

  2. Gaël

The citrus aromas are well marked, but it remains very round on the palate. Delicious with rum baba or cake.
