Malecon Seleccion Esplendida 1979 40°: Description and customer reviews

Malecon Seleccion Esplendida 1979 is part of a collection of Panama's finest vintages. This molasses rum was distilled in columns in 1979, then aged in bourbon barrels for 30 years, before being bottled in 2009.

The brand was created by Italian Marco Savio, who selects rums produced using the Cuban method.

Nico's tasting notes

The nose is generously vanilla, buttery, caramelized, with a mellowness that abundantly flatters the nostrils. Closer examination reveals a slightly more powerful rum, carried by a toasty, gently spicy woodiness.

Aeration sets a slightly brighter scene, still just as tender of course, but with more consistency. The vanilla is sweet and fragrant, as are the light wisps of coconut that hover in the glass.

The palate is a sweet concentrate of caramelized nuts, as in a gourmet tart with almonds, hazelnuts, pecans and more. Vanilla and other sweet spices also play a role, balancing out the more roasted flavors.

The finish is round, sweet and a little buttery, bringing us back to a generous pastry. It evokes a sort of Demerara rum with an extra touch of mellowness.

"A dessert rum, that warms and comforts like a good pecan pie..."
