Malteco 25 ans Reserva Rara 40°: Description and customer reviews

Malteco 25 ans Reserva Rara is a rum from Panama. It was distilled in column stills at the Bodegas de America distillery, before spending 25 years in oak barrels that had previously contained bourbon.

Nico's tasting notes

In short: caramel - vanilla - coffee - nuts - mild spices - sweet and light.

The nose is typically mild Latino, with a sweet profile, turning to vanilla, coffee and mild spices. Very round, it lets us imagine a butterscotch thickening. Cinnamon adds its powdery touch and a little relief, then the melted cane sugar again caresses the nostrils.
Aeration leaves more room for roasted notes. The coffee that appeared in the introduction doesn't betray its promise and develops in a rather dry way, carrying with it a cohort of roasted nuts and wood passed through the flame. As it recedes, this rather dry wave leaves a deeper, richer caramel than on the first nose.

On the palate, the attack is round and well caramelized, almost like the caramel used as a topping for rice pudding, for example. As on the nose, this caramel is enriched by roasted spices, toasted wood and roasted nuts. Despite this burnt character, the rum remains light and does not take over the mouth.

The finish sees a second wave arrive, this time of vanilla, for a resolutely softer, sweeter moment.

In its price range, I expected better, even if it's already a good rum.

If you like it, we recommend :

  • A very similar rum, very smooth on the palate...
  • The same bottle with 2 original glasses...
  • A more roasted profile on the nose...
