New Grove 5 years Old Tradition 40° : Description and customer reviews

New Grove 5 ans Old Tradition is an old rum that will introduce connoisseurs to the spirit of Mauritius.

This is a complex rum with a strong personality, thanks to its aging in Limousin oak barrels.

Nico's tasting notes

The nose of this New Grove is fairly typical, with smoky, woody and burnt gum notes running through almost the entire range. There's also a hint of metallic, in the same vein as "traditional" rum. Licorice takes its place in this somewhat harsh universe, revealing the deliciousness of thick, dark molasses.
As the glass is shaken, the rum becomes more generous, its metallic character melting with notes of quince jam. Then beeswax and spices take us to a more classic profile of caramel, toasted wood and vanilla.

On the palate, the brand's distinctive character comes to the fore: it's smoky, even tarry on entry. A certain acidity is felt on the tongue. Quince jam and a touch of vanilla flatter the palate.

On the long finish, caramel and a certain salty sensation persist, as does the burnt note that accompanied us throughout the tasting.

"This is the basis of the New Grove profile. If you like this one, you'll have a great time with the rest of the range..."

I didn't like the banana candy aspect. Otherwise nice product.

New Grove 5 ans Old Tradition: a declaration of authenticity

The New Grove brand has the particularity of being very young (marketed since 2005), while at the same time being the rum brand of a giant, since it belongs to the Grays distillery, which has existed since the first half of the 19th century. Originally specialized in the production of sugar and then "neutral" alcohol, Grays now owns no less than 16,000 hectares of sugar cane.

At first glance, we appreciated the sobriety of the presentation and the work that has been done on the visual identity for a rum priced at less than 35€, which is important to note, both for the case and the bottle.
If you turn the bottle upside down, you'll see that nothing has been added to alter the color, smell and/or taste of this rum.
This rum was aged in Limousin oak barrels before being refined in port casks.

Our verdict: Clearly off the beaten track, a little light and lacking in structure, it's still engaging enough to try other rums from the distillery. Because of its aromas, it should be very well suited to cocktails, even if we personally enjoy it pure for its original taste.

Nose: rather dry, reminding us of very ripe pineapple, even stewed, followed by a woody, braised note, with a hint of metal that dissipates after a short aeration to give way to much more gourmand notes of roasting (chocolate) and vanilla.

Palate: the smoky/tarry/smooth liquorice notes come first on the palate, before giving way to fruit and vanilla notes.

Finish: rather dry, with grilled spice notes.

This rum reminded me of my calvados collection. The apple is present, even if the nose is far from calvados.

    Color: golden yellow
NOSE: spices (vanilla, pepper), apple and orange (not the same orange as Don Papa's, fortunately). Quite pretty and complex.
Palate: A little disappointing, as there's less complexity on the palate than on the nose. The palate of New Grove 5 ans is marked by spices and especially vanilla. It's pleasant and the spices give this rum character. With a note of apple, this bottle could have been likened to a Boulard XO calvados.

Finish: Medium-long, with warm vanilla notes.

Very friendly, excellent value for money. With a little more complexity, this rum would have been perfect.

    4/5
