Zaka Rum Martinique is an agricultural rum from Habitation La Favorite. This small distillery in Martinique is one of only two still family-run and independent on the island.
Zaka, the voodoo god who protects farmers, naturally laid his hands on this local rum.
Aged in oak casks for 18 months, this pure-juice rum is a fine tribute to sugarcane.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose offers us a pretty bubble of ripe, sweet, almost candied cane. The pepper and bagasse are also candied, very soft, caught in this cane juice with a hint of spring honey. A few lime peels add a light touch of freshness, for a well-rounded balance.
Aeration develops a slightly larger body, fullness and depth. The cane is overtaken by the mellowness of the wood, an oak encrusted with sweet spices and bitter citrus.
On the palate, the attack is dry but balanced. This is not a round, sweet rum, but pure, authentic cane juice, coated in a solid, peppery bark. The bitterness of citrus zest tightens the taste buds on the mid-palate, giving way to fermented vesou.
The finish is slightly iodized, with a cane that's always generous with citrus fruit.
"Quite a contrasting rum, and in the end quite complete, with a mellow nose and a firmer palate..."
