Chalong Bay Infuse Lemongrass comes from the Phuket region. It is a pure cane juice rum that is infused with lemongrass during distillation. Lemongrass, like sugar cane, is grown locally by Thai farmers.
Lemongrass is a herbaceous plant cultivated for its leaves and stems (which can grow up to 2 meters long), which have a lemon-like aroma.
It is grown mainly in hot climates, in Asia, North Africa, the Caribbean and Central and South America. It is a very popular ingredient in South-East Asian cuisine, blending particularly well with coconut, garlic, ginger and chili pepper.
It's an infused rum that can be enjoyed neat as a white tasting rum, or as the base for inventive cocktails.
Nico's tasting notes
On the nose, it's immediately clear that this is a rum made from pure cane juice, and a very nice one at that. The cane au naturel is radiant and fresh, and is quickly joined by a strong lemony side that centers precisely on the lemongrass. The blend is finely balanced, so that you don't get the impression that it's a blend at all. All we have is a cane whose herbaceous and lemony characters have been exacerbated. A hint of straw confirms the authenticity and terroir of this rum. With time, however, the lemongrass comes to the fore. The nose is quite powerful, and should be smelled with care.
Aeration, while initially revealing a candy cane, pushes the lemongrass cursor a little further. We're now into something profoundly vegetal, with a handful of fresh herbs and a little tangy honey.
The attack on the palate is typical of a white rum, with a strong focus on cane and a fairly peppery aspect. The liveliness of the white spirit is striking and intense. Then lemongrass fills the mouth and covers the whole palate, bitter and acidic at the same time, as in a very lemony ti-punch. The good taste of white rum is there, but dominated by the famous lemongrass.
The finish insists on lemongrass and a tasty peppery sensation remains on the taste buds.
"This infused rum has been just right. Of course, the heralded lemongrass dominates the tasting, but it also highlights a beautiful cane brandy..."
