The Dominican Republic was one of the first countries to develop sugarcane plantations. Perhaps this explains why rum from this island has achieved such a high level of quality, recognized internationally.

Dominican Republic rums are Cuban-inspired rums. They are light and follow the same production process: these rums are distilled in column stills and aged in American oak barrels.

In this country, rum is considered a quality product and is highly appreciated by the local population. Today, there are more than 15 distilleries.

A small proportion of production is reserved for export, as 90% of the rum produced in the Dominican Republic is consumed domestically.

The main Dominican rums are Barcelo, Bermúdez (produced in the Dominican Republic since 1852), Brugal, Matusalem (produced since 1872, this is an emblematic brand of the island) and Vizcaya. Some rums are less well known, but are nonetheless of high quality, such as Opthimus, Cubaney, Summum, Presidente Marti, Ron Esclavo and Relicario. Read less
