Colombia
Colombia is one of the great producers of rum. A major producer in terms of the quantities produced by the country's distilleries, but also in terms of the quality of the products: Colombian rums have a long list of awards and victories in international competitions.
Colombia's climate and ideal location are favourable factors for the cultivation of sugar cane. Sugar cane is essential to Colombia's economy, accounting for more than 10% of the country's arable land. The Cauca Valley, in the southwest of the country, has the most sugar cane plantations.
Colombia produces white rums, but also old rums called "añejo" or "viejo".
The main Colombian rums are Dictador (created in 1913), Medellín (the most consumed in Colombia), Santafé, Tres Esquinas and Viejo Caldas. Read less
