Colombia
Colombia is one of the world's leading rum producers. A major producer in terms of the quantities produced by the country's distilleries, but also in terms of the quality of its products: Colombian rums have an impressive record of awards and victories in international competitions.
Colombia's ideal climate and location are ideal for growing sugar cane. Sugar cane is essential to Colombia's economy, accounting for more than 10% of the country's arable land. The Cauca Valley, in the south-west of the country, is home to the largest number of sugarcane plantations.
Colombia produces not only white rums, but also aged rums known as "añejo" or "viejo".
The main Colombian rums are Dictador (founded in 1913), Medellín (the most widely consumed in Colombia), Santafé, Tres Esquinas and Viejo Caldas. Read less
