French Guiana
Guyana has strong sugar and rum traditions. In 1930 there were 17 rum distilleries. Today the number has considerably decreased, there are 6, including the oldest in the country still in operation, the famous Saint-Maurice distillery. This same distillery, which has been able to withstand the competition from West Indian rums, benefited in 2013 from a major investment that enabled it to modernise.
The cane fields are located on a hundred hectares in eastern Guyana. The region has good quality land between Iracoubo and Saint Laurent du Maroni. The hot and humid climate of Guyana has a major influence on the ageing of the rum.
