French Guiana
French Guiana has strong sugar and rum-making traditions. In 1930, there were 17 rum distilleries. Today, the number has dwindled considerably, to 6, including the country's oldest still in operation, the famous Saint-Maurice distillery. This same distillery, which has successfully withstood competition from West Indian rums, benefited from a major investment in 2013, enabling it to modernize.
The cane fields are located on around 100 hectares in eastern French Guiana. The region has good-quality land between Iracoubo and Saint Laurent du Maroni. Guiana's hot, humid climate has a major influence on rum aging.
The Saint-Maurice distillery produces La Belle Cabresse, La Cayennaise and Le Cœur de Chauffe rums, as well as Toucan agricultural rum Read more
