Mossburn Whisky Island Blended Malt 46°: Description and customer reviews

Mossburn Whisky Island Blended Malt is a blend of Scotch malt whiskies from different Scottish islands. Mossburn has opted for double maturation, with a cask profile called "smoke & spice".

The first part of the aging process took place in ex-bourbon American oak casks. During the second part, the blender shaped the whisky in his own way. Custom-built 200L casks were used; here's their composition:

1/8 of the barrel (the head) is made from heavily toasted European oak. The next 2/8 are first-fill ex-bourbon American oak staves. The final 5/8 are made up of American oak staves that have contained other whiskies several times over.

Nico's tasting notes

The nose is inevitably marked by a rather greedy peat, rather round and fatty. The smoke is rich but not really medicinal or ashy. It is rounded by a soft woodiness, with a patina of sweet spices like vanilla.

Aeration takes us to a darker, more burnt profile, and a few touches of ash begin to appear. The whisky becomes a little drier, less rounded, but still sweet. There's also a hint of the sea hanging over the glass, with a salty, gourmand quality.

The palate is much more colorful, with a pretty palette of fruity and floral reflections. Red fruits are generously sweet, flowers are velvety, and the whole is crowned by tender, toasted cereals.

On the finish, the peat once again shows itself to be reasonable, while adding its share of smoke over the long finish, with a hint of iodine and licorice.

"A fine balance has been found here, and peat lovers will appreciate its measured expression..."
