Old Brothers HJF 2008 60,8° 50cl : Description and customer reviews

Old Brothers HJF 2008 is a Jamaican molasses rum that is the fruit of a collaboration with wine merchant La Source, behind Toulouse's first artisanal spirits fair in 2021.

Fermented for 3 long weeks with indigenous yeasts, the molasses was distilled in an iron still. The rum then spent 12 years in an ex-bourbon cask in a tropical climate, with a 52% angels' share, before being repatriated to France for a further 1 year. At bottling, it offers an exceptional 2930 grams of volatile substances per hectoliter of pure alcohol.

Bottled without cold filtration, this unique cask has issued a total of 391 bottles worldwide. Each bottle is numbered.

Nico's tasting notes

The nose is powerful and terribly engaging at the same time. This is a rum that sticks to the nostrils. Magnetic, it bewitches and makes you unable to let go of the glass. A strange, solvent-tinged sweetness emanates from it, strangely reminiscent of a well-concentrated, still-distilled rum made from pure cane juice. Of course, a huge armful of very ripe exotic fruit takes center stage.

Aeration only reinforces the rum's scope, as it continues to fire in all directions. Spices and roasting roar beneath the exotic fruit compote, as does the intensely expressive bitter almond.

On the palate, it's the intensity that speaks, rather than the wild, organic Jamaican style. Exotic and candied fruits are sharp, clean and warm, supported by roasted notes and white-hot copper. With a hint of molasses, and even cane, comes a more pastry-like register, full of stone brandy, bitter almond and licorice.

The finish is slightly acidic, with a hint of candied citrus mingled with olive brine.

"A vibrant, intense rum that keeps our attention at all times..."
