Saint James Vieux 12 ans 43° : Description and customer reviews

A tasting rum par excellence, this Saint-James has benefited from 12 years in oak barrels to acquire a complex, refined character.
The angels' share - the volume evaporated over the years - has concentrated the aromas to make this an exceptional cuvée.

The Saint-James Vieux 12 ans won two medals at the Concours Général de Paris, in 2011 and 2012.

Nico's tasting notes

On the nose, we've just cut and separated the shell of a maracuja, a little bomb of tangy exoticism. The spices are very fragrant, like Sechuan pepper, pink berries and coriander seeds. There's also a burnt (empyreumatic) edge, quince paste, and that lively, acidic fruitiness. Despite this well-furnished profile, we sense that the rum needs more opening, the atmosphere is still a little overcast.
Indeed, aeration will allow the rum to blossom, to restore the full breadth of the aromas previously encountered, and above all to considerably broaden its palette of colors. Plum is added, along with dark berries such as blueberry and blackcurrant. A few catchy tannins also come through, before the rum softens to a more vanilla-like woodiness. As for the rest, it reveals inviting notes of prune in brandy.

The attack on the palate is soft and classy, let's say silky. There are distinct flavors of honey and prune, and vibrant sugarcane. The rum offers a mellow sensation, not at all tannic. Pepper, nutmeg and cinnamon also mingle in this melt.

The finish is tasty, with dried fruits that mark the palate well, pepper and old oak.

"This 12-year-old stands out from the other rums in the range, it has its own personality that makes you want to compare it with its younger and older brothers..."
