Torabhaig Allt Gleann is a highly peated single malt from The Legacy Series. Torabhaig is located on the Isle of Skye in Scotland, built within the walls of an old abandoned farmhouse. A stream of pure mountain water lies close to this distillery, which has been in operation since January 2017.
The whisky was made from concerto and laureate barley varieties, with a phenol content of 77 ppm (parts per million). It was fermented with Pinnacle MG+ and Safspirit M-1 yeasts, then distilled in copper pot stills. The 2 stills are named Sir Iain and Lady Noble, after the couple who owned the land and the old farmhouse. The brandy was then aged in first-fill ex-bourbon casks and reused whisky barrels.
Bottling was carried out using a blend of up to 30 barrels, from 2017 and 2018, without coloring or cold filtration.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose is powerfully aromatic, yet balanced in terms of strength and alcohol. It's a fine mastery, with intense but well-balanced aromas. Malted, fermented cereals dominate, accompanied by a peppery, paprika-like smokiness.
Aeration loses in freshness what it gains in softness. The cereals become cozier, more comfortable, and roll in a light layer of ash. The fruit is delicate and harmonious, as are the spices, in a very fair and elegant profile, with slightly peaty vegetal accents.
On the palate, as on the nose, an impression of mastery and harmony reigns, without boredom for a second. Tasty but not spicy pepper opens the dance, followed by smoky, peaty, more organic and iodized notes. Barley is both candied and fruity, with a nougat-like quality and hints of green banana and pear.
The finish offers a peppery, gourmet peatiness, always with finesse and balance.
