Atlantico Reserva is a blend of two rums: a "heavy rum" distilled in pot stills and a "light rum" distilled in columns. These two rums were first aged for 3 years, then blended and aged together for 2 years, before finally being integrated into a solera system that varies in age from 10 to 20 years.
Nico's tasting notes
In brief: thick - buttery - caramel - vanilla - brioche - woody - sweet
The buttery, cardboardy thickness of the nose is immediately striking. The vanilla is also very thick, and the damp, slightly caramelized, sweet woodiness also contributes to the impression. After a few seconds, the rum lifts a little and begins to gain strength.
Aeration rids the nose of this very sticky thickness. What remains is vanilla, salted butter caramel, and an intriguing impression where vanilla, sweet spices and brioche cohabit with something sulphurous.
The palate is very sweet, with a good rasp of caramel and vanilla. The softness of the brioche is then enhanced by a handful of peppers.
The finish retains some of that spiciness, with spices set against a rather savory, vanilla-scented wood.
