Barbancourt Réserve du domaine 15 ans 43° : Description and customer reviews

This Haitian agricultural rum is first distilled in columns, then in Charentais stills, before aging in Limousin oak barrels.

This packaging, revised in 2022, is sure to delight fans of the brand: the bottle is unique, the screw cap has been changed for a cork one, and the label and case have been rejuvenated... Here's the old version.

Before the 1960s, Barbancourt Réserve du Domaine was reserved exclusively for family and friends. Today, it is sold in limited quantities, given its 15 years of age.

He was awarded the gold medal at the IWSC in London in 2008.

Nico's tasting notes

On the nose, the wood is strongly burnt, which immediately leads us to a roasted register. There's cocoa and a fair amount of coffee. Although this is a pure cane juice rum, a molasses aroma also takes over, with a hint of licorice, accompanied by roasted nuts. One expects something rather sticky, like a very dark honey. The nose is quite intense and full, but also rather linear, gripping but simple.
When you shake the glass a little, you get the sensation of something powdery catching the nose, the burnt aspect contributing to this impression. There's also caramel, the kind that's hard and crunchy.

The first taste is sweet, the rum sliding over the tongue like a candy. We're still on the same register, i.e. caramel - coffee - molasses (the latter is still a little liquoriced). The woodiness seems less burnt, simply toasted.

It's this toasted side that lingers, with a hint of alcohol.

Quite aggressive on the palate, but with good length, it captures the full range of flavors afterwards. Too bad, I was expecting a lot from this rum.

  2. Jean-Luc FABY

A marvel. Barbancourt rums have a very strong identity, just like Haiti. It's instantly recognizable. The quality is exceptional and the value for money unbeatable.

  3. Sébastien

    Nice discovery of this rum

  4. Paul Thoureau

Excellent product to know. Today unobtainable from other wine merchants, but despite the price, which has risen by 20e compared with last year, it's well worth it.

  5. Stéphane Ti'verre

On the nose 👃🏻: the first aromas that come to mind are vanilla and wax, with a nice overall sweetness. I also find something in common with the 8-year-old version, namely a slightly medicinal edge. But the acidity here is clearly more pronounced, identified by lime and apple, with cinnamon. It, too, is surprisingly not particularly woody for its age, but a little more so all the same.

On the palate 👅: these medicinal and lemony notes are clearly present on the attack, with a lovely finesse and I'd even say freshness. They then take a back seat to vanilla, followed by oak wood, which brings a good dose of cinnamon and even a hint of coffee. Here too, the sweetness is very satisfying, with plenty of roundness on the palate in the mid-palate.

The finish is relatively long. It's still a little more coffee and roasted, slightly peppery, followed by a touch of menthol at the very end 👌

Verdict ⚡️: this rum offers a lovely freshness on tasting, with surprisingly tart notes for a product of this age. I wouldn't say it far surpasses the Réserve Spéciale as the latter is already very well made, but it's a different profile and a little more refined overall ✨ Their rums are singular and very nice to discover 😃

  6. Isabel Sanchez

    Very good bottle
Character, round on the palate, fragrant, a wonderful discovery.

  7. Maëlle

Very good rum, appreciated by the person I gave it to. The cork is not made of cork, but that doesn't change the quality.

  8. Cedric Monteiro

Very good, reliable and efficient site

  9. Belly Daniel

  12. SEB

    Overpriced
Very similar to a molasses rum, Plantation Péru
As a lover of rhum agricole, I'm very disappointed.

My wife is of Haitian origin, so I know and appreciate it.
St-Martin I find it at -$25.00 (so I'm being subjective).

  22. samyr

  23. Bruno

Since my stay there, I can't live without it. It's dry but not too dry, strong but not too strong... IN TWO WORDS: well-balanced and it smells like vacation.

  24. Baptiste B

An agricultural rum that seduced me with its measured aspect. It doesn't really have any extremes, which I think is a sign of great expertise.

  25. Gérard

I received this Haitian rum as a gift. I was very pleasantly surprised by the rum, even though I'm used to Martinique AOCs. I only realized when I came to this site that it's pure cane juice like the AOCs.

  • A rum from Guyana, also well marked by molasses and spices...
  • To stick with roasting...
