Big Mama 15 ans PX 40°: Description and customer reviews

Big Mama 15 ans PX was distilled in 2002 from molasses from Guyana's Demerara River region. In the past, this country was home to distilleries with such legendary names as Port Mourant, Enmore and Skeldon.

The Diamond distillery has retained the original stills from most of these distilleries, and is therefore able to reproduce these unique styles.

This rum has traditionally been aged in ex-bourbon casks. In recent months, it has been aged in Pedro Ximenez sherry casks, the smoothest of the Andalusian mutated wines. It was finally bottled in 2017, 15 years after distillation.

Nico's tasting notes

The nose is typically marked by wood, caramel and molasses, with a hint of oxidized walnut, which is reinforced here by the sherry cask finish. There are also some more surprising fruity accents, indicative of a relatively light rum.

With a little air, the rum retains its mellow, caramelized character, but the fruits gain in depth and concentration. Dried fruits such as dates and apricots come to mind, as do fruit jellies with a slight tarry note.

The palate is round but balanced, and surprisingly woody and fruity, almost reminiscent of an old agricultural rum. Indeed, tannins melted into dried apricots take us briefly to Guadeloupe (Sainte Rose to be precise), before returning to a more roasted, smoky ambience.

The finish is round and caramelized, and once again the cane invites you in for the long haul.

"A multi-faceted rum that steps out of its tradition to join the cane..."
