Chantal Comte Fighting Spirit Gold 50°: Description and customer reviews

The "Fighting spirit Gold" white rum selected by Chantal Comte is a tribute both to the spirit of rugby (the term fighting spirit in Irish rugby means the will to win), and to rum, the spirit that sustained troop morale during the 14-18 war.

Fighting Spirit Gold can be served at room temperature, or chilled as an aperitif (put it in the freezer beforehand to avoid diluting it with ice cubes). Of course, it can also be served as a ti punch!

This is a limited edition of 6,000 bottled in April 2017.

Nico's tasting notes

In brief: round cane - citrus - candied - pepper - concentrated

On the nose, we have a well-rounded, even chubby cane. It's nonetheless lemony and vegetal, with a candied straw character. The sweetness of this cane translates into a lovely eau-de-vie with hints of marron glacé. But sweetness doesn't prevent intensity: citrus fruits, as well as notes of fermentation and pepper, awaken this candy cane just right.
Aeration reveals a more vegetal profile, with stronger accents of fermentation, though the latter is very greedy and not at all acidic. This profitable fermentation expresses a green, juicy vegetal character. The cane juice is very fresh and peppery, the pepper literally mingling with the cane flesh. It's an excellent choice for superb ti-punches.

On the palate, the rum is tasty and sparkling. The cane is round, very round, and also oily. It's equally peppery and invigorating. The rum is thick and sticky, almost sweet, with a full, concentrated mouthfeel.

The finish is delicate, with notes of marron glacé and steamed artichoke enhanced by pepper.

"This white rum is superbly gourmand and concentrated, with an intensity that is never brutal..."

To complete the picture, here's what Chantal Comte has to say about it

Floral on the nose, with hints of iodine and salt, velvety and honeyed on the palate to soften the powerful notes of sugarcane, fruit and exotic flowers.
