Cihuatan Obsidiana is a blend of very old molasses rums produced in El Salvador.
This limited edition is made up of three rums aged between 11 and 14 years, aged in new American oak and ex-bourbon barrels.
This cuvée pays tribute to obsidian, an enigmatic stone sacred to the Mayan civilization. According to legend, the Mayans believed it to be the ultimate gift from the gods of Xibalba (the realm of the dead) . The goddess Itzpapalotl was the embodiment of Mayan obsidian, known as the "obsidian butterfly", whose ornate wings were carved from this precious stone. She rose from Xibalba to keep travellers company and protect them beneath her wings.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose is generous and sunny, immediately bursting with softly woody, fruity notes. Candied orange peel is draped in a curtain of vanilla, giving the wine a velvety appearance.
With a little air, the fruit takes up all the space, with a ripe yellow banana leading the way. Sweet spices and vanilla pick up a few grains of cane sugar and caramelize them, for a light roasted finish.
The palate is very round and gently spicy, with our curtain of vanilla sliding slowly over the taste buds at first, revealing a toasty woodiness with almost mineral accents. Its fiber melts into peppery flavors, then the rum flows again like caramel.
The finish is caramelized and perfumed with chocolate-covered candied orange peel.
"A very smooth rum but not devoid of body, so a good alternative in the category..."
