Contrabando is a honey cane rum produced in the Dominican Republic by Oliver & Oliver Internacional.
This Caribbean rum is handcrafted from a recipe that goes back six generations. It is aged for 5 years in oak barrels using the solera method.
The first bottles arrived in Spain in 1998 via the notary Fernando Mora, on his return from a pleasure trip to the Dominican Republic. They were not declared legally at customs, and importer Luis Caballero described the rum as contraband, hence the name. Rest assured, everything is now under control and perfectly legal 😉
Nico's tasting notes
The nose is very sweet and largely vanilla. It's lulled by mellow caramel, giving it a confectionery air. The tender oak is imbued with coconut milk and a blend of sweet spices that remind us of a gourmet cake batter.
Aeration introduces a bit of roasting, which adds relief and balance, with a drier nuance.
On the palate, the sweetness is accompanied by a certain lightness, making the experience particularly easy and fluid. The toasted wood develops a few roasted accents and a certain toasted bitterness, which quickly leads to a caramelized edge.
The finish is underscored by vanilla and sweet spices, and the "cake dough" spirit discovered on the nose returns.
"A very easy and light rum, gently scented with vanilla..."
