A very old rum, Dos Maderas PX 5+5 ("two woods" in Spanish) is the product of triple aging.
This highly elaborate eau-de-vie is made with rum from Barbados and rum from Guyana. In other words, it's a traditional English rum.
These rums are aged for 5 years in their country of origin, in the tropical climate of the Caribbean. Then it's off toAndalusia, to the land of historic bottler Williams & Humbert, for blending and 2 further maturations: 3 years in Palo Cortado "Dos Cortados" casks, a rare variety of sherry, and the final 2 years in Pedro Ximenez sherry casks.
The result is a syrupy rum, rich in its multiple terroirs. Dos Maderas PX 5+5 is best enjoyed neat.
Laurent's tasting notes
Its color is a deep copper with red highlights.
On the nose... quite a lot. There's fruit: fresh grapes, candied prunes and nuts, followed by almonds after a while. The barrel is there too, offering well-balanced oak and tobacco notes. Overall, it offers an interestingly dry, gourmand impression.
On the palate, we find tobacco and walnut, with candied fruit also present but a little in the background. The whole is soft, but well-balanced with alcohol.
The finish is long. The aromas of tobacco, walnuts, prunes and oak, which we enjoyed earlier, are again present.
"Here's an interesting rum that could easily serve as a bridge between more classic sweet rums and more complex rums."
