Grosperrin MMC Cuvée 3 41 years old 17.5°: Description and customer reviews

This vintage has been replaced by another at least as old and even more delicious: Grosperrin MMC Cuvée 3 18.5°

Grosperrin MMC Cuvée 3 is a 41-year-old cognac-mutated grape must. It was produced in 1979 by a winegrower who owned a farm in the small Borderies production area in the Matha region.

It comes from a single batch, aged for almost 35 years in the property's small earthenware cellar, in 550-liter transport casks with the "Narbonne" origin engraved on them. These barrels may have contained wine, as was sometimes done with these products. Since 2013, it has been transferred to Guilhem Grosperrin's cellars in Chermignac, to continue its ageing in very old 350 and 400-liter cognac casks.

This exceptional lot displays the characteristics of very old MMCs, when sugar and acidity became so discreet as to give way to more pastry notes, both candied and floral.

Nico's tasting notes

The nose is very rich and deep, and immediately shows extraordinary thickness. The grapes are candied to the extreme, even heavier than in a jam, and are joined by fleshy dates. Later, hints of mushroom transport us to a damp cellar, or close to a fermentation tank.

The palate is both round and tangy, offering much more freshness than we might have imagined. The jammy grapes lend a vegetal air, along with a toasty, almost brioche-like sensation. Hints of walnut give a lovely rancio finish, a mark of age and maturity, followed by a hint of menthol as the wine lingers.

"A lot of greed and richness, but with elegance, without any heaviness..."
