Masam 2004 Clynelish is a Scotch Whisky from the collection of the late Silvano Samaroli. His wife Maryse Samaroli has taken over from the Italian independent bottler to pay tribute to him.
The single malt was distilled in 2004 at the Clynelish distillery in the Highlands. After many years of ageing in oak casks in the Scottish climate, the whisky was bottled at its natural strength in 2021.
This single barrel filled exactly 292 bottles.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose of this whisky could be mistaken for that of a mezcal (or is it the other way around?). Its smoky, vegetal and organic aromas bring us back to earth, before taking flight in fruity arrows. The apples and pears fall back again, to land in the middle of a creamy, buttery cookie, with great gourmandise.
Aeration confirms this pastry trend, which now turns to lemon meringue pie. A few lemon zests and a handful of fresh herbs enhance the cream, giving it more life and response. A superb balance.
The palate is lively and particularly pleasing on the attack. Although the whisky seems to have retained a certain youth and spontaneity of distillation, it offers a rich and complete experience. The ripe fruits are concentrated into a honeyed sweetness, the peppery blond tobacco is extremely tasty and tugs at a slightly smoky vegetal, just right.
The finish brings together all the pastry greediness of the nose, with toasted cereals, buttery pastry and oily nuts.
"A whisky selected with inspiration, covering a very broad aromatic spectrum..."
