M&G Grogue Velha 3 Year Old Tarrafal de Monte Trigo is a pure sugarcane juice rum produced on the island of Santo Antão, in the village of Tarrafal de Monte Trigo. Crafted using traditional local methods, this aged grogue showcases the archipelago's rum-making heritage and the expertise of the region's producers. It benefits from three years of maturation in oak barrels that previously held wine.
The sugarcane used comes from local crops grown in volcanic soils. It benefits from a dry tropical climate and natural irrigation, which promote its growth. Two traditional varieties, Cana Prêta and Cana Riscada, are used in particular for the production of grogue. The fresh juice extracted from the cane is then fermented and distilled using traditional methods in pot stills , according to a Cape Verdean tradition passed down through generations.
Distilled from the 2020 harvest by Graciano Évora, this Grogue Velha is then aged in oak barrels that previously held wine , where it remains for three years . It is bottled at its natural strength of 45.5% ABV, without further reduction, and offered in a limited edition of 430 bottles .
The Música e Grogue brand, founded in 2017 by Simão Évora and Jean-Pierre Engelbach, aims to promote Cape Verdean grogue, which is still relatively uncommon on the international rum market, while supporting local producers.
