Nikka Coffey Grain 45°: Description and customer reviews

Nikka Coffey Grain is a grain whisky distilled in a coffey still at the Miyagikyo distillery.

This "single grain" is made from corn, and is a "pure" version of the grain whisky used by Nikka for its blends.

Tasting notes from Thomas

The nose is like a dessert with gourmet aromas. Coffee cream puffs, a little shredded coconut and a hint of mint form the first aromatic wave. After a few seconds, caramel becomes more present, as does an amalgam reminiscent of peach Melba. A nose that takes us away from the classic image of whisky.

Aeration allows further exploration of its particularities. The nose remains greedy and sweet, with a hint of chocolate, oranges, maple syrup and walnuts. There's also a hint of tobacco.

The palate matches the nose with coffee cream puffs, walnuts and chocolate. The pastry dimension also carries brown sugar, rum baba and banana. The second half of the palate is still unctuous, but offers other perspectives. Licorice, caraway, a touch of wood (sawdust effect) and Melba peach. Coffee takes over again, with a touch of cinnamon and tobacco.

The finish has sufficient body. It vigorously combines coffee, licorice, vanilla, orange candy, cinnamon and wood. If there's a slight bitterness (green wood), coffee and brown sugar provide the gourmet component.

"A grain whisky that plays the pastry card to the hilt... "
