Relicario Supremo 40°: Description and customer reviews

Relicario Supremo is a Dominican Republic rum aged for 15 years in American oak barrels. It is the brand's top-of-the-range "ron", with sweet vanilla notes.

The cellar master who developed Relicario is very popular in Cuba. He is Juan Alberto Alvarez, renowned in the world of traditional Spanish ron.

Nico's tasting notes

The first nose offers caramelized and gently woody notes, on roasted nuts and vanilla. This is a pure molasses rum in the Hispanic tradition, balanced and without the excess sweetness that can be found in this style. There's a fairly full heart, with no alcohol aromas but a hint of solvent and toasted coconut. The bourbon barrel takes pride of place, toasted just right, not charred.

With aeration, we continue on to a lovely caramelized bourbon cask, on coconut, soft wood and vanilla. The rum has lost none of its body, opening onto something more vegetal, details of a slightly fresher wood, with straw. Spices join this greedy vegetal, with cinnamon, nutmeg and a hint of dried orange peel.

The palate is very light and fluid, without sugar or alcohol, and glides smoothly over the tongue. The wood settles gently on the taste buds, its toasty character gradually melting into caramel, vanilla and sweet spices. The rum has a frail, delicate body, and the cask does all the work, smoothly.

The finish is equally light, fading to nuts and blond sugar.

"An honest rum with a pleasant nose and a very smooth palate..."
