Launched in 2020 by Mark Reynier, also the founder of Waterford, the Renegade distillery has developed an approach deeply inspired by the concept of terroir. Each batch seeks to highlight the influence of the sugarcane variety, the plot of land, and the production methods on the rum's identity.
New Bacolet is a vintage from the Etudes range of the Renegade distillery, a collection designed to explore the early stages of aging rums produced in Grenada.
This rum is made from the Lacalome Red (B80689) sugarcane variety, harvested in early 2021 on the Goat Hill plot , within the New Bacolet farm, on the clay terroir of Upper Combe. The cane was then distilled in a Pot Still type still.
After distillation, the rum was divided into different casks to begin its 18-month aging process: 19 ex-Bourbon American oak barrels of 200 liters each, sourced from Kelvin Cooperage, and 6 ex-Bourbon French oak barrels of 225 liters each, sourced from Taransaud. In total, only 6,000 bottles were produced for this edition.
With New Bacolet, the Etudes range offers a deep dive into the heart of Renegade's work and research around aging, through a single-vineyard cuvée produced in limited quantities.
