SBS Jamaica New Yarmouth 1994 57°: Description and customer reviews

SBS Jamaica New Yarmouth 1994 is a very old molasses rum from Jamaica. The New Yarmouth distillery is part of the same group as Appleton. It is best known for Wray & Nephew's iconic overproof rum. To produce this extremely typical and funky rum, it uses pot-stills and distillation columns. The latter is the source of this rum, bottled by 1423 World Class Spirits of Denmark, in their Single Barrel Selection range.

Distilled in 1994, it was aged in bourbon casks until February 2021. It is therefore a single cask of a rum that is over 26 years old! Only 308 copies were bottled for this unique cask.

Pauline's tasting notes

At first, esters capture the nose. Soon, fruitier notes emerge. Flambéed banana and exotic fruits catch our nostrils. A bewitching nose that promises great promise on the palate.

On the palate, the attack is lively, the fiery alcohol quickly balances out. A slight bitterness evolves on the fruit. While banana predominates, a light woody backdrop adds structure.

Some spices joined the fruit for a fairly long, persistent finish.

Nico's tasting notes

The nose initially surprises with its gentle notes of yellow fruit, just caressed by sunshine, pale and velvety. This contrasts with the distillery's usual solvent-driven profile. Concentration arrives quickly, however, to our delight. The soft, vanilla-drenched wood harbors a jammy, pastry-like sweetness that almost sticks to the nose.

With aeration, it's the American oak cask that takes undivided control. Vanilla, blond tobacco, coconut milk, milk chocolate and soft white wood all combine to create a comfortable olfactory mattress.

On the palate, the wine is woody, rich and spicy. Luscious nuts are lacquered with gourmet caramel and maple syrup, for a sticky, almost resinous profile. The white oak is full of vanilla and coconut, in 100% American oak style.

The finish takes the barrel influence even further, with some cereal bourbon nuances.

"A very gourmand and concentrated rum, not very fruity but roundly woody..."
