SBS Panama 2010 Madeira Finish is a column-distilled molasses rum. Panama is a small country with significant sugarcane and rum production. Its distilleries have some of the largest casks in the world.
The rum was distilled in 2010, then aged for 8 years in American oak barrels containing bourbon. The Danes at SBS then transferred it to Madeira casks for a further year. The result is a 9-year-old rum from a single cask, produced in 315 bottles.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose begins with a discreet but refined cocoa flavour. Nuts take over, without excessive roasting, but on the contrary, with a rather fatty character. Fresh, tangy fruit then escapes, seemingly well-coated.
Aeration takes us to fruit jellies, underlined by a hint of oxidation, rancio and copper. Nuts and pits give us the impression of an old sweet wine, overlaying an exotic fruitiness.
The palate is full and rather round, with a thick texture garnished with nuts and stone fruits. At the heart of the rum is a ripe, exotic fruitiness, along with round spices like vanilla and cinnamon. A little animal touch seems to hang around, like fresh leather mixed with resinous aromatics like rosemary.
The finish has a hint of nuts and Madeira wine.
"A rather imposing, gourmand finish, enveloping a generously aromatic rum..."
