Blair Athol

Blair Athol is a Scottish whisky distillery located in Pitlochry , Perthshire , on the edge of the Highlands . Among the oldest distilleries in Scotland, it was founded in 1798 by John Stewart and Robert Robertson under the name Aldour, after the local water source, the Allt Dour, which is still used today. After an initial closure due to lack of success, the distillery was taken over and expanded in 1825 by John Robertson, who gave it its current name, Blair Athol. Its history is marked by numerous changes of ownership and a closure in 1932, before being rescued and completely renovated by Arthur Bell & Sons , with production resuming in 1949. Later acquired by the Diageo group , Blair Athol now operates four stills: two wash stills and two spirit stills . The majority of its production is destined for blended whiskies, notably Bell's , while a small portion is bottled as single malt, including the renowned Blair Athol 12 Year Old from the Flora & Fauna range, known for its smooth and rich character. The label features a drawing of an otter, as the name of the river Allt Dour means otter in Gaelic. It's worth noting that the whisky destined for Bell's is aged in bourbon casks, while the single malt is matured in sherry casks. Read less
