The Knockando distillery was founded by John Thompson in 1898. Its name means "Little Black Hill", after an area of Speyside near Ballindalloch in Moray.
Its destiny was almost extremely short-lived, as the whisky crisis of 1899 led to its closure in 1900. In 1904, gin producer W&A Gilbey Ltd bought it and put it back on its feet. It was connected to the Scottish railroad in 1905.
A major modernization took place in 1969, when the number of stills was doubled from two to four. Today, the distillery still boasts 2 conical wash stills and 2 spherical spirit stills. Knockando whiskies are always vintage. Read less
