La Hechicera

La Hechicera ("the witch" or "the enchantress" in Spanish) is aColombian rum distilled on the Caribbean side of the country. The Casa Santana, run since 1993 by the Riascos family in Baranquilla, is the originator.

Casa Santana was created in partnership with the Cuban government, to circumvent the embargo. It distilled a rum with a profile very similar to Cuban rum, but produced in Colombia.

The house's "maestro ronero" is Giraldo Mituoka Kangana, a Colombian of Japanese descent who started out as a cane cutter before rising through the ranks to become a key figure in the distillery.

Hechicera is a column-distilled molasses rum. It is a blend of rums aged from 12 to 21 years, aged according to the solera principle. All the casks used for this solera are old bourbon barrels. No addition or cold filtration is carried out before bottling. Read less
