Myers's Rum

Myers's Rum is a recipe created in 1879 from Jamaican molasses rums. It's a blend of 9 different rums, all distilled in the same place, at the Clarendon distillery, part of the Monymusk sugar refinery. This method is typically Jamaican: the island's distilleries have a long tradition of selling rum in bulk to various brands and blenders. They therefore offer rums with different profiles and concentrations, varying their fermentation and distillation methods according to their customers' needs.

Theblend of these 9 rums, produced in continuous columns as well as in pot-stills, is then placed in ex-Bourbon barrels (American white oak barrels heavily "toasted"), part of which will age for 4 years.

This is a Dark Rum, a style in its own right inherited from the first rums imported to Europe. At the time, it was thought that the darker the rum, the more mature and concentrated it was, so to force nature and the consumer, rums (often in the English tradition) were colored with leather, molasses or caramel. This category has survived because it bears witness to a sumptuous era for rum, but also because it has become inseparable from cocktail culture, and Tiki in particular.

The color of Myers's Original Dark comes from the addition of molasses during aging, which also gives it a heavy body and licorice aromas, in addition to the very fruity and exotic signature of Jamaican rums. Read less
