Aberlour 16 Year Old Highland Single Malt is a Scotch Speyside whisky. While the distillery's trademark is above all sherry casks, this cuvée benefits from double maturation. American oak (ex-bourbon) casks and oloroso sherry casks are aged separately, for at least 16 years.
It's the house master blender who then blends the casks to achieve the desired subtlety. This cuvée is an annual production limited to a few batches.
Nico's tasting notes
At first, the nose is delicately toasted, with the whisky exhaling slightly smoky aromas. A slice of toast is covered in honey, lightly caramelized with brown sugar, almost like French toast.
Aeration brings a little more tannin, but above all red fruit, candy-like banana, before all this is coated in a fluid caramel with hints of vanilla.
On the palate, the fruit is riper and more consistent, like an almost cooked banana melted into a soft muffin. It's easy to imagine a few milk chocolate chips embedded in the muffin, along with a small handful of nuts. The wood offers a few pinches of pepper, as well as tannins melted into soft spices.
The finish is greedy, almost pastry-like, with a hint of cherry pit and sage.
"A very well-balanced, gourmet whisky with a biscuity allure... "
