The Great Whites is a collection from French independent bottler La Compagnie des Indes.
Florent Beuchet's aim with this collection is to highlight aromatic white rums with very different styles and origins.
This Ghana Mid West is a pot still distilled pure cane juice rum from Ghana, and more specifically from the Mid West Ghana distillery. Like the 3 rums in this first series, it is bottled at 50%.
As the emblem of this series, a white shark appears in the center of the label to represent "The Great Whites".
Nico's tasting notes
The nose screams naturalness and ripe cane, with a slightly cooked juice that tugs towards unrefined cane sugar, and can even go as far as toffee. This butterscotch edge is balanced by a velvety, slightly resinous vegetal character, enhanced by a hint of pepper; perfect.
Aeration reveals another layer of aromas, this time more from fermentation. We come across a few steamed vegetables, drizzled with an intense herbal juice, and a tomato sweetened ketchup-style with cider vinegar.
The palate is full-bodied and generous, with cane juice invading the palate in a single wave. This juice is lightly cooked, developing nuances of licorice and raw sugar, and still a buttery toffee edge. It regains a little spice and freshness on the mid-palate, with a peppery flesh with hints of marron glacé, particularly tasty.
The finish is a little wilder, long and stretches out over brined olives.
"A very pretty cane brandy, spontaneous, natural and generous..."
