In 2022, Depaz rums will celebrate 100 years since the reconstruction of the magnificent Château Depaz. Located at the foot of Mount Pelée, it was destroyed along with the town of Saint-Pierre in the volcanic eruption of 1902.
It was in 1922 that Victor Depaz set about bringing the family estate back to life.
For the occasion, a unique cuvée was created by cellar master Nora Carrion-Martinez. The 2011, 2013 and 2016 vintages were selected from 10 200-liter casks, then blended to create 1,400 numbered bottles. These rums were aged between 6 and 11 years in the distillery's cellars. The majority of the casks selected are American, with 2/3 red and 1/3 new.
Only 300 of these magnificent bottles are available for export. This makes it a very limited edition.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose offers a lovely woody bouquet garnished with oily nuts such as peanut, almond, walnut, hazelnut... Ripe cane settles on the oak, adorned with fresh hints of eucalyptus, opening the way to a fruit-laden breeze.
Aeration leads us to a cigar box with elegantly exotic wood essences, encrusted with fine spices and tobacco. The cane juice, now jammy, takes on these golden-brown aromas with delight.
On the palate, sweet spices and wood duel with cane juice and pepper. An invigorating start, typical of the AOC Martinique style. Another characteristic: this encounter is elegant, with just the right amount of character, but without burning. The result is a gently peppery syrup, loaded with blond tobacco and a few fresh coffee beans.
The finish is peppery and full of aged cane juice.
"An encounter between cane juice and wood, as typical of its tradition as can be...".
