An aged rum produced on the banks of the Demerara River by British Guiana's last distillery, El Dorado 8 ans is a blend of several rums distilled in the traditional stills, including one made of wood, used at the distillery. The rum was then aged in oak casks previously used for aging bourbon.
El Dorado 8 ans is the meeting of the heavy rum characteristic of distilleries with English traditions and lighter rums, offering a pleasant tasting experience, dry or in cocktails.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose of this rum is truly "Demerara", with molasses, a toasty woodiness, a roasted and dry side. Walnuts and chestnuts are roasted and coated with molasses. Coffee and cocoa are dark. Hazelnuts are present, but have not been stripped of their fine envelope. This dryness is balanced by stewed banana flesh and dried fruit (grapes, figs and even dates).
Caramel arrives with time, before the rum's aromas become a little muddled. Aeration doesn't really change the profile, except that it's a little less roasted and greedy. It becomes more modest.
Caramelized woodiness marks the palate's entry, smoky and burnt. Notes of roast and molasses come to the fore. Once we've had this rum in our mouths, we detect more ripe fruit on the nose, notably a plump cherry.
The finish is fairly smooth. Molasses and caramel are still present.
"A rum that offers a profile typical of Demerara rums, we'll go further down the range for more complexity..."
