El Pasador de Oro 50, like XO and Gran Reserva, comes from several distilleries in Guatemala.
After an initial long aging on site in solera (6-15 years) in several types of barrels, these are imported to Charente in the cellars of the French company Les Bienheureux. After assembly and an additional stay of 6 months in cognac barrels, it is finally bottled at 50° in this superb decanter.
The end result is a cuvée less "sweet" than the other 2 rums in the range, with intense aromas.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose opens with a roasted profile, with roasted nuts caramelized with molasses. There's also a certain gourmand concentration, with a good handful of vanilla and toasted coconut. The woodiness peaks under a slick of solvent, then vanilla tobacco joins sweet spices, before the coconut melts on tender white oak.
The palate is gripped by strongly roasted nuts, just as the nose promised. This attack is rather dry, but the rest is more mellow: soft wood takes over, with vanilla, tobacco and sweet spices. The Latino style is respected, but we're a long way from excessive sugar.
The finish is caramelized and gourmand, like a brioche passed through the grill.
