Elephantom 43°: Description and customer reviews

Elephantom is an aged rum produced in South Africa by the Kinship Spirits Co PTY (LTD) distillery.

This aged rum is triple distilled in pot stills. It is then aged in old bourbon casks.

The name of this rum refers to a local legend. Once upon a time, herds of elephants roamed the Knysna forest in South Africa. Today, poaching is thought to have wiped them out. But occasionally an elephant is spotted by those trying to trace the animals. Is it a ghost, or a lone elephant? This rum has been created to pay tribute.

The Kinship distillery draws its inspiration from South African legends to offer spirits rich in history and to highlight the symbols of the country.

Nico's tasting notes

On the nose, this is a rather heavy rum, with notes of fermentation tending towards very ripe exotic fruits. The resinous, oily notes are refreshed by spicier, more aniseed-like aromas, confirming the rather heavy character.

With aeration, we get as close as possible to the copper still, with a metallic profile that then translates into passion fruit seeds, a little iodine, and bitter orange peel.

The palate is very soft, without being sweet, allowing us to quietly welcome its rather funky, deep profile. Long-fermented molasses is at the heart of the rum, with licorice breaking down into softly resinous notes, pits, exotic fruits, with a salty, somewhat roasted hint that once again recalls Asian sauces.

The finish is powdery, a little chocolatey, gently spicy, sometimes reminiscent of Navy rums and/or Demerara rums.

"A full-bodied, characterful rum, typical of long fermentation, which nonetheless knows how to present itself in a balanced, smooth light..."
