Gosling's Black Seal 40°: Description and customer reviews

Gosling's Black Seal is a Bermuda rum that has been produced by a family business for almost 150 years. Year after year, the rum has grown in reputation to become one of the island's most exported products.

Always made in limited editions to preserve its quality, it is distilled in both an iron still and a column. Gosling's Black Seal combines the techniques of cognac and grappa to obtain a result that is both highly aromatic and very smooth.
Its complexity is undeniable, making it an interesting and accessible tasting experience.

It can of course be enjoyed neat, but it's also the perfect rum for making the Dark & Stormy cocktail.

Nico's tasting notes

The nose of this rum is quite linear at first. There's a toasty woodiness accompanied by caramel and molasses. We get the impression that we're dealing with a round, thick rum, an impression reinforced by the very dark color. From then on, maple syrup comes to mind, and we continue in this very gourmand vein as notes of almonds, walnuts and caramelized pecans seem to surface.
These caramelized walnuts and pecans gain strength when the glass is shaken a little. Some red fruit and licorice then creep into the exhaled vapors. This evolves into something more vegetal, with a hint of tobacco. The woodiness holds and structures the whole.

The attack on the palate is surprisingly sweet and tangy, melting like warm gingerbread. The palate then matches the nose as walnut and fruit stone come back in force. Finally, the maple syrup lingers on the palate.

In the end, tobacco and roasted nuts remain on the palate, as does that maple syrup.

"A rum primarily intended for cocktails, but which can also be enjoyed with dessert and a scoop of ice cream..."

    Very surprising

Too characterful for my taste, this product is rather straightforward. It lacks aging in my opinion.

Atypical, I'm used to Guadeloupean aromas, and I wasn't charmed, but it's not uninteresting either and will undoubtedly find enthusiasts.

    Very good nice discovery

A very pleasant rum to drink neat, which goes very well with cocktails such as dark n stormy (originally only gosling was used). Pure, it's very easy to drink, whether you're an initiate or a novice. A delicate rum that will appeal to the widest range of rum lovers, or to those wishing to discover the pleasures of rum.

Color: dark mahogany with orange highlights.

A nose with a certain intensity without being exceptional. An impression of a very sweet and syrupy nose, giving it a very gourmand but slightly nauseating side. Notes of caramel, coca cola, molasses and cinnamon. Then there are toasted notes (toasted almond). In addition, this Gosling's Black Seal has a vegetal side that brings freshness to the nose. I agree with nico's tasting note. Little by little, you get notes of moist tobacco.

Quite a complex nose, but lacking a little elegance.

On the palate, it's syrupy. You can taste the molasses rum. Quite a bit of caramel. A toasty woodiness that, for me, unbalances the whole mouthfeel. Then there are vegetal notes, honey and maple syrup.

The finish is liquorish. Notes of caramel, honey and roasted almonds and walnuts. Nuts come late, but linger long on the palate.

It has no pure interest. It needs to be integrated into a cocktail, to add caramelized and toasted notes to the whole. I'd like to see it in a fruity cocktail with a cinnamon stick. To stay with a 100% rum cocktail, I tested it with Plantation Pineapple. An interesting blend

    1.5/5 pure
    3.5/5 for its mixologist appeal
