This Gold Rum is produced by the Jamaican distillery Hampden.
It is a light andfunkymolasses rum thanks to the esters produced during pot still distillation.
It can be enjoyed neat but will also work well in a tiki cocktail, especially with pineapple.
Nico's tasting note
On the nose, there is a fine balance between an exuberant exotic fruitiness and the roundness of a rather pastry-like rum. These two sides come together around a greedy resin that flirts with the cherry pit. If we look a little closer, we find a very wild heart, with an animal, organic and earthy side.
The aeration completes the harmonization of all these slightly crazy notes. Then we find the unique complexity of the distillery, catchy and greedy, funky and pastry-like. Time develops some more mature aromas of plums and cherries.
The palate is soft, quite light in the first moments, then a greedy wave begins to roll quietly over the taste buds. In the middle of a pastry atmosphere, fruits in brandy rub shoulders with sultanas, sabayon, candied fruits and flambéed banana.
The finish returns to wilder notes, with prunes and cherries in olive brine.
"Hampden's identity deconstructed by a major reduction, to get a feel for the style before turning up the intensity..."
