This Gold Rum is produced by the Jamaican distillery Hampden.
This molasses rum is both light andfunky, thanks to the esters produced during pot still distillation.
It can be enjoyed neat, but will also work well in a tiki cocktail, especially with pineapple.
Nico's tasting notes
On the nose, there's a fine balance between exuberant exotic fruitiness and the roundness of a rather pastry-like rum. These two sides come together around an indulgent resin that flirts with cherry pit. Closer examination reveals a very wild heart, with an animalic, organic, earthy quality.
Aeration completes the harmony of all these slightly crazy notes. We then find the distillery's unique complexity, catchy and gourmand, funky and pastry-like. Time develops more mature plum and cherry aromas.
The palate is soft and light at first, then a wave of gourmet goodness begins to roll quietly over the taste buds. In a pastry-like atmosphere, fruit in brandy rubs shoulders with raisins, sabayon, candied fruit and flambéed banana.
The finish returns to wilder notes, with prunes and cherries in olive brine.
"Hampden's identity deconstructed by a major reduction, to get an idea of the style before turning up the intensity..."
