Héritiers Madkaud VSOP Cuvée Castelmore 40° : Description and customer reviews

Héritiers Madkaud VSOP Cuvée Castelmore is a 4-year-old AOC old rum made from pure Martinique cane juice.

Laurent's tasting notes

It has a golden-orange color.

On the nose, it's not easy to identify. It is characterized by aromas of sweet spices, licorice and orange. There's also something mineral and damp at the same time, reminiscent of a cellar. The whole is not devoid of freshness. An atypical nose.

On the palate, we find the three main players: licorice, orange and spices. The balance between cask and vesou is good, with neither taking precedence over the other.

The finish is long. Only licorice is absent from our trio, so notes of orange and spice lead the way. A slight "powdery" note is also present.

On the nose 👃🏻: it's a woody juice, with an olfactory signature that reminds me a little of Saint James XO. I find that old oak wood that seems to have come out of a cellar, a little damp. It delivers a lovely cocoa note with pepper and a hint of vanilla, and the cane adds a nice sweetness to the whole. The more minutes go by, the more I get the impression of coconut, with a light caramel note binding it all together.

On the palate 👅: the notes we had on the nose are transcribed quite well here on the first sips, particularly the cocoa that develops for very long seconds. This rum is quite round on the palate and rich in aroma. A hint of fresh cane on the nose, but this soon fades. Then there's damp, spicy old oak, with more pepper and licorice.

The finish is dry, spicier and quite long I find. The pepper lingers for a while, then the oak gently switches to a mix of leather and mocha, with nutmeg to finish 👌

Verdict ⚡️: after discovering the Cuvée Castelmore white rum, which I really liked, this VSOP hits the nail on the head in a different register 👍 For an aggressive price and its small 40%, it manages to deliver something captivating, both on the nose and on the palate. It's a great Martinique that I enjoyed tasting and warmly recommend 🥃
