Isautier 12 ans Alfred Rhum Vieux 45°: Description and customer reviews

Isautier 12 ans Alfred pays tribute to Alfred Isautier, who in 1910 created the emblematic triangular bottle of the Isautier house. This traditional rum was distilled in column stills in 2005. It then spent 8 to 14 months in new oak barrels, then in fine-grained red barrels, for a total of 12 years of tropical aging.

Nico's tasting notes

The nose is inhabited by an extremely fragrant woodiness, bursting with fruity tannins. The spices are not to be outdone, with peppercorns of every color. The wood and tannins take us a step further, as we discover their resinous, almost medicinal heart.

With aeration, the toasted oak returns to something simpler, roasted, spicy, before bouncing back and regaining color. Various marmalades and fruit pastes follow, from quince to orange bigarade.

The palate is initially subtly woody and caramelized, garnished with rather heavily roasted nuts coated in molasses. This roasting gives off a mineral edge, with hints of charcoal, black coffee and fire-roasted chestnuts, as well as an almost coppery, metallic feel. This is accompanied by blood orange acidity and bitterness, with fresh, piercing fruit.

The finish oscillates between copper, bitter orange, blueberry and even a touch of tar.

"A rum quite typical of a certain Reunionese tradition, brassy and almost medicinal..."
