JM 's wood-aged rum has forged its character in small new oak barrels. After 12 months' ageing in the distillery's cellar, the cuvée has developed a rich palette of aromas, exalting both the fertile terroir at the foot of Mount Pelée and Martinique's sunny climate.
JM 1 year old wood-aged rum won the gold medal at the 2012 San Francisco World Spirit Competition. Excellent for long drinks.
Nico's tasting notes
On the nose, an extremely rustic side of rhum agricole is on offer from the outset. This gruff rum will upset the delicate palate. It's as close as you can get to the distillation column, with a metallic edge mixed with burnt notes and unrestrained alcohol vapors. The tour of the distillery continues in reverse, with a short tour of the fermentation vats: the cane juice is just beginning to turn, and we catch a whiff of wet cardboard. Then it's back to the Holy Trinity of rhum agricole: the bitterness of lime zest, pepper and cane straw.
The rum is turned a little in the glass, allowing other aromas to emerge: the cane straw takes us to a damp field scattered with bagasse (what's left of the cane after pressing: the fiber and bark).
Although disconcerting, the palate is intense. Initially peppery, it rounds out to evoke thick, fermenting juice. The ever-juicy bagasse sticks to the palate.
