Kong rum is back in a limited edition for the festive season of 2022! It's the same rum, at the same price, but in a black bottle...
Kong is a molasses rum made from Guatemalan plants, inspired by the gorillas that inhabit the Virunga mountains.
The aim of this rum is to raise public awareness of the threat of extinction facing these poached Eastern gorillas. Kong donates part of its profits to The Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International.
It is made from rums produced by the Darsa distillery and aged for up to 9 years in American white oak barrels. The rum is distilled with ingredients inspired by gorilla habitat: wild bananas, eucalyptus leaves, wild celery, wild blackberries, tender bamboo shoots, sugar cane, and a complex blend of herbs kept secret. This is a 100% natural rum, made with no additives or added sugars.
Bottling takes place in limited editions of 4804 units at a time - as many as the number of Eastern Lowland Gorillas left in the world.
Nico's tasting notes
On the nose, we find a handful of dried herbs and spices, with green hints of eucalyptus and nutmeg. A certain freshness emanates from this rather gourmand nose, with hints of lemongrass and citrus peel.
With aeration, the profile becomes softer, more delicate and fresher. Citrus fruits release some of their juice, which spices soon cover with a gourmet film.
The palate is immediately gripped by a pinch of spices like nutmeg and cinnamon, with cardamom adding its share of freshness and taking us to citrus and ginger. The rum is sweet but not sugary, and offers a little astringency on the mid-palate.
The finish is spicy and fragrant, fresh and delicious like a lemon cake.
"A spicy, sugar-free rum that can be enjoyed neat or in a cocktail..."
