Old Monk The Legend Rum is an Indian aged rum made by Mohan Meakin Ltd. in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh.
This is a rum made from molasses. It is the distillery's top-of-the-range product.
This rum is best known for its original bottle in the shape of a monk's head. In fact, it refers to the company's founder, a British entrepreneur who settled in India in the early 19th century.
Nico's tasting notes
In short: nuts - coffee - molasses - sweet - caramel
On the nose, those familiar with the Indian brand will recognize the famous roasted nuts, sweet and concentrated. The rum is dark and the caramel extravagant, as is the wood, which is more than toasted. Molasses and licorice spread over toast already covered with maple syrup and walnut slivers.
With aeration, the vanilla calms this dark side, but only for a while, as the caramel soon cooks again and thickens considerably, reminiscent of concentrated beef broth.
On the palate, caramel and molasses land on the palate, releasing a concentrated toasty woodiness. As on the nose, the profile is very dark and sweet, with intense notes of caramel and nuts.
The finish is long, with a more humid woodiness, like a cardboard box that has contained coffee. Roasted nuts emerge from this woodiness and sum up this tasting experience.
"An Old Monk faithful to its tradition of roasted, sweet concentration..."

very good full-bodied taste for discerning amateurs.

Good. Caramel and nuts on the nose.
Clean attack of toasted wood.
So far, matches the description.
The finish lacks a little roundness and complexity for my taste and is limited to an aftertaste of dry alcohol mixed with bitter coffee.

As good dry, at room temperature or practically chilled, as with fruit or in cocktails.
