La Mauny Ratafia is an artisanal rum from Martinique made by mutating sugarcane juice. It is produced by the La Mauny distillery in Rivière-Pilote, with the help of the talented Daniel Baudin, voted best cellar master in the world in 2018 and 2019.
For this special cuvée, rhum agricole is added to the must before fermentation of the pure sugarcane juice. The blend is then aged in oak barrels.
3000 bottles of this 2018 edition have been released. It's a recipe that showcases all the nobility of sugar cane, the raw material for Maison La Mauny's agricultural rums.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose is very gourmand, revealing both the roundness of well-sweetened cane juice and the elegance of a barrel-aged rum. The balance is nicely achieved, and then opens up to fruitier aromas of candied citrus and roasted orchard fruit.
The palate is round, oscillating between cane juice and fruit juice, with woody nuances that add a good deal of elegance and a touch of rancio, in the manner of a pineau. The candied cane juice is enriched by the freshness of the agricultural rum, and the two come together under a pinch of sweet spices and citrus peel.
"A little Martinique sweetness to enjoy as an aperitif or with dessert..."
