Gus't Engenhos do Norte 2006 Full Proof is an IGP agricultural rum produced on the island of Madeira. After 3 years without bottling a single rum, Le Gus't wine shop set its sights on this nugget, a single cask that was bottled on site in October 2021.
The rum was distilled in June 2006 by the small Portuguese distillery built in 1927. To this day, it remains the only distillery in Europe still operating on steam. After 15 long years of ageing, cask number 58 produced a total of 261 numbered bottles. Bottling was carried out "brut de fût", i.e. without any reduction in alcohol content.
Nico's tasting notes
The nose is powerful and fruity at first, and the rum escapes the glass in very fresh flights. Then the cane juice kicks in, slowing this escape considerably with more consistent aromas.
With aeration, the patinated cane juice definitely wins the battle. It is brioche-like, lightly caramelized and roasted, and seems as fat as a cigar tobacco leaf. Yet it retains its freshness and herbaceousness, with hints of mint and other aromatics.
On the palate, there's a hint of acidity on the attack, which, though quite surprising, is far from unpleasant. It immediately gives way to cane and herbs, which express their freshness and proximity to citrus fruit. The wood has waited its turn, and takes over to coat all these lovely herbaceous notes.
The finish is greedy, brioche-like, with blond tobacco, vanilla oak and a hint of pepper that tickles the tongue at the very end.
"A cane well wrapped in gourmet oak, yet losing none of its freshness..."
